OpenAI Launches its New office in Tokyo, First in Asia

The artificial intelligence startup OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, opened its first Asia office in Tokyo. According to Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, AI will accelerate work by empowering people to be more creative and productive, while also delivering broad value to current and new industries that have yet to be imagined.

The office was unveiled on April 15, 2024, as its third international office. OpenAI previously launched branches in London and Dublin last year. OpenAI has hired the former President of Amazon Web Services Japan to lead business expansion in Japan. According to him, OpenAI aims to establish a strong presence through continuous dialogue with companies, as the company plans to grow its workforce by 10 to 20 workers this year.

Microsoft plans to invest $2.9 billion in the next two years for beefing up data centers and cloud infrastructure. Plus, there’s a $200 million startup called Sakana AI by two ex-Google researchers. Microsoft is teaming up with SoftBank for generative AI, and OpenAI is collaborating with Rakuten for local AI services.
