Google has announced the launch of Search Labs, a new program that invites users to test early-stage search experiences in the Chrome browser. The program will offer users a first look at Google’s bold and responsible experiments across the company and give them the chance to provide feedback directly to the teams who built them.
Search Labs is available to a limited number of people in the US and in English only. To join the waitlist, users need to be 18 years or older and have a personal Google Account. Google Workspace accounts are not currently supported.
Once users have signed up for Search Labs, they can access a range of experiments in the Google app on Android phones and iPhones and in Chrome on desktop. Experiments include AI-powered experiences like the Search Generative Experience (SGE), which provides AI-powered overviews, pointers, and follow-up suggestions, as well as features for Google Workspace like writing suggestions in Google Docs and Gmail, data organization in Sheets, and text-generated images in Slides.
Google has emphasized that the experiments are in early development, and quality and availability may vary. The company hopes that user feedback will help it decide which ideas to develop into full-blown features or products and which ones to scrap.
In a blog post announcing the launch of Search Labs, Google said that it had been inspired by the original Google Labs, which allowed users to test early-stage Google products and features. Google Labs was discontinued in 2011, but the new Search Labs program aims to recapture the spirit of experimentation and innovation that characterized the original.
The launch of Search Labs comes as Google faces increasing competition in the search market, particularly from Microsoft’s Bing search engine, which has recently introduced ChatGPT-powered search experiences. By inviting users to test early-stage search experiences, Google hopes to stay ahead of the curve and continue to innovate in the search space.
Search Labs is just the latest example of Google’s commitment to experimentation and innovation. The company has a long history of launching new products and features, many of which have gone on to become hugely successful. With Search Labs, Google is giving users a chance to be a part of that innovation and help shape the future of search.
