In a groundbreaking development for the tech industry, Apple announced today that developers on the App Store generated a staggering $1.1 trillion in billings and sales in 2022 alone. This milestone, revealed in an independent study conducted by economists from Analysis Group, solidifies the App Store’s position as a thriving and resilient ecosystem.
The study showcased the remarkable growth of the App Store, with billings and sales facilitated by the platform experiencing a remarkable 29% year-over-year increase. This growth trend underscores the exceptional opportunities available to developers worldwide. Moreover, an astounding 90% of the billings and sales were accrued solely by developers and businesses, without any commission paid to Apple.
The report further shed light on the positive impact of the iOS app economy, indicating that it now supports over 4.8 million jobs across the United States and Europe. This figure, as revealed by the Progressive Policy Institute’s analysis, demonstrates the far-reaching influence and economic significance of the App Store ecosystem.
Breaking down the sources of revenue for App Store developers in 2022, the Analysis Group study revealed that $910 billion was generated from the sale of physical goods and services. In-app advertising contributed $109 billion, while digital goods and services accounted for $104 billion. These figures demonstrate the diversity of revenue streams available to developers, empowering them to monetize their apps and build successful businesses.
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, expressed his enthusiasm for the achievements of the App Store developer community, stating, “We’ve never been more hopeful about—or more inspired by—the incredible community of developers around the world. As this report shows, the App Store is a vibrant, innovative marketplace where opportunity thrives, and we’re as committed as ever to investing in developers’ success and the app economy’s future.”
The study highlighted the remarkable success of small developers on the App Store, surpassing larger developers by growing their revenue by an astounding 71% between 2020 and 2022. This statistic showcases the dynamic and competitive nature of the marketplace, fostering growth, innovation, and opportunity.
The Analysis Group study also examined the growth drivers within the App Store ecosystem, pointing to sectors like travel and ride-hailing rebounding significantly as pandemic-related restrictions eased. In 2022, travel sales made on iOS apps increased by 84%, while sales on ride-hailing apps rose by 45%. Additionally, the food and grocery app categories experienced significant growth, with iOS app-based food delivery and pickup sales more than doubling since 2019, and grocery sales more than tripling.
The study also highlighted the importance of enterprise apps, which have gained popularity among companies worldwide in recent years. These apps represented one of the fastest-growing categories for digital goods and services in 2022. Additionally, the app-based entertainment category experienced significant growth, in line with emerging trends such as the creator economy.
The App Store’s global reach was also underscored in the report, with over 195 local payment methods and 44 currencies supported across 175 storefronts. This allowed developers to connect with users beyond their home countries, with 54% of app downloads occurring in storefronts outside developers’ home regions. Furthermore, the App Store attracted an impressive average of over 650 million weekly visitors worldwide in 2022, and users downloaded and redownloaded apps more than 747 million and 1.5 billion times per week, respectively.
